Celebrating LGPE/Upcoming Dates

Good evening,

I hope that you all are enjoying the beautiful weather today!

I wanted to take a moment to congratulate both bands on a magnificent concert last week! Both concerts were performed beautifully and made all of the hard work worth it. Both bands scored all 1’s (Superiors) on stage and sight reading! The judges had some great things to say about our program along with advice on what to keep working on to improve. I am thankful for the volunteers through this whole concert cycle who helped feed the students and chaperone on busses. It truly takes a village!

This week our only rehearsals are our two jazz band rehearsals. These are on Monday and Wendnesday mornings at 7:45 AM.

Please continue selling AYP Cards and working on finishing up your Carowinds payments if you have not paid off your trip yet. Keep in mind that each AYP card sold earns $3 off of your trip!

Upcoming dates:

  • March 25th at 6:00PM: Booster Meeting at high school band room for all students participating in marching band next year.
  • March 28th: 8th grade auditions at CHS Band room. Must sign up for time here: Audition Sign Up
  • April 13th: Braves game trip!

Have a great day!

Sincerely,

M. Menendez

8th Grade Auditions/High School Band Meeting

Good evening!

Below is VERY important information about the upcoming audition for all 8th grade students. This allows us to place the students in the correct class for next year.

Special note: All 8th grade students must attend these auditions even if they are not continuing on with band next year. These results will be used to rank our 8th graders for their Spring concert. Hosting two auditions would be redundant and would not be a good use of our class time. Students will stay after school with me and walk over to the high school with me for auditions. They may be picked up from the high school band room once they have completed their audition

BAND PARENT MEETING • Booster Club Meeting

March 25, 2019 at 6:00PM in the High School Band Room.

We will go over the summer schedule, the handbook, and announce the show!  This is a mandatory meeting for students participating in the marching band next year.

Placement auditions will take place after school on Thursday, March 28 beginning at 4:00PM.  Students will be able to sign-up for a time.  Auditions are required for all students to participate in the high school band and will determine class and chair placement.  Auditions consist of three parts which are explained below: Etude, Scales, and Sight-reading.  Please sign up for the audition by clicking here.  Be sure to add your name to the appropriate list (tabs at the bottom).

Etude:

The etude was passed out in class last week or can be accessed on Charms or by following the links below.  The etude is worth 60 points on your audition (or the value of 20, 1 octave scales!)

The etude will be graded based on all of the elements of music: tone, pitch, tempo, rhythm, technique, articulations, dynamics, musicality, expression, style, etc. A compelling performance of the etude can earn you 50 points.  Be sure to pay attention to the time signature, tempo marking, and key signature.

Scales:

Please perform as many major/minor scales as you can in 2 minutes.  The scales do not have to be memorized.  Students will receive a maximum of 3 points per octave that is performed correctly (1 point ascending, 1 point descending, and 1 point for the arpeggio.) Mistakes may be corrected but you only have 2 minutes to complete their scales. If time runs out in the middle of a scale, you may finish that scale for full credit but will be finished at the end of that scale. Articulation and rhythm does not matter for scales, but note accuracy is imperative. Keep in mind: your scale score is not limited by anything except time. You can really earn a lot of points in this category if you practice diligently. It is rare, but not unheard of for students to perform 12 major and 12 minor scales, 2 octaves in a 2 minute period.  Are you up for the challenge?

Chromatic Scale (Winds Only):

Students are encouraged to demonstrate their full range by performing their chromatic scale.  The chromatic scale does not have to be memorized. GMEA has requirements for recommended ranges for students who are auditioning for district honor band.  Their recommendation is a great starting goal.  The scale should be performed in an even rhythm both ascending and descending.  Points for the chromatic scale will be awarded as follows:

  • Perform the Junior High School required ranges for a total of 20 points
    • Flute Low C to High F
    • Oboe Low C to High C
    • Bassoon Low Bb to High F
    • Soprano Clarinet Low E to High D above High C
    • Bb Low Clarinet Low E to High A Bb
    • Eb Contra Alto Clarinet Low E to High A
    • Alto Sax Low C to High D
    • Baritone Sax Low C to High D
    • Tenor Sax Low C to High D
    • Trumpet Low F# to High G
    • French Horn Low F to High F
    • Trombone Low E to High F
    • Baritone (BC) Low E to High F
    • Baritone (TC) Low F# to High G
    • Tuba Low E to High F
  • For each additional note added to the range students may earn an additional point for their Chromatic Scale.
  • Bonus points: There is no specified tempo, but the evaluator has the discretion to award up to 10 bonus points for performing the scale with quality tone in all registers, speed, and exceptional evenness of the performance.

Rudiments (Percussion Only):

Percussionists will perform 3 rudiments of their choice in an open – closed – open tradition instead of a chromatic scale.  Performance will be graded on speed, technique, and evenness of sound.  Each rudiment will be evaluated on a 10 point scale.  Additionally, 10 bonus points are reserved to be rewarded as bonus points for exceptional speed, tone, and technique.

Sight-reading:

Sight-reading will consist of a short excerpt that you will perform after a 30 second study period. During the study period, I encourage you to “airplay or air band” through the music, just keep in mind that you are not allowed to make a sound on your instrument during the study period. Sight-reading is graded on all of the elements of music like the etude is graded. It is important to be well versed in all rhythms, scales, keys, dynamics, articulations, etc. to be a good sight-reader. Students who are able to perform a compelling interpretation of the sight-reading beyond the notes and rhythms will be awarded more points.  You will have an option between two sight-readings.  An easier sight-reading will be worth 30 points or you can choose the more difficult one, which is worth 50 points.

HAPPY PRACTICING!

-M. Menendez

Carowinds chaperones/Band Polos for pictures tomorrow

Good afternoon,

Please make sure that your student brings their band polo to school tomorrow. We will put them on for our class pictures during class. Jeans and regular school shoes are okay for the lower half.

Carowinds:

As I am looking through my chaperone list for Carowinds I do not see anyone who has paid the extra $85 to get a single room. If you would like a room to yourself as a chaperone then I will need to know ASAP so that they can reserve those rooms for you. If not then you will be paired with another chaperone of the same gender. These are the chaperones that I have attending the trip:

Connie Easterwood
Molly Camp
Devondreale Williams
Danielle Miley
Jasmine Hopkins Arnold
Katie Reid
Tiffany Landrum
Kim Huett
Samantha Hawks

Please let me know if you are okay with the paired room or if you would like a single room. Single rooms add $85 on top of your $150 chaperone fee.

AYP Fundraiser:

Please continue selling AYP Cards. They are $15 each and if you purchase 5 you receive one for free. 8th graders earn $3 towards their Carowinds trip per each card sold.

Pre LGPE:

Congratulations to our 7th and 8th grade bands on their performance on Thursday. That performance gave us some valuable insight as we continue pushing towards LGPE on March the 13th. Getting to rehearse in the hall where our evaluations will occur gives us a great advantage. We are thankful to Temple high school for inviting the Carrollton bands to share that concert.

I am so proud of what our band is becoming. Our students are polite, hard working, professional, well behaved, and even are starting to become proactive and resolve things before they even have a chance to become an issue. I am so extremely proud of the music that they make but most of all, I am proud of who they are growing up to be. Thank you for entrusting me with these incredible humans that push and inspire me daily. Being a part of our band programs takes a lot of time commitment and sacrifice. I am so grateful for the parents who volunteer and for the students who make our program what it is.

Please come and support them on March 13th for their performance at the Carroll County Performing Arts Center. 7th grade performs at 3:15PM and 8th grade performs at 6:00PM. Itineraries coming soon.

Go Trojan Band!

Sincerely,

Ms. Menendez

Symphonic Camp Recap and Rehearsals

Good evening,

I hope that the kids had a blast at Symphonic Camp this Saturday! I personally learned so much and enjoyed watching the kids learn as well from new teachers. It was also a joy to have some fellowship time with our band afterwards and hang out. I am extremely thankful for the parents that pulled through and helped with rides, set up, clean up, and lunch. Trust me, I could not have done this without you!

This week we have normal rehearsals with 7th grade tomorrow until 5:00 PM and 8th grade on Tuesday until 5:00 PM.

Because of the incredible work going on in class and rehearsals I have decided to cancel the following rehearsals to allow students to attend sports, tutoring, and other activities full time on those days:

7th Grade February 25th

8th Grade February 26th

Please mark those off of your calendars.

Our next concert is on February 21st at the Carroll County Performing Arts Center. Students will be bussed too and from that concert. Time details will be released to you all once I know them.

District Honor Band:

DHB begins this Thursday! PLEASE read through the itinerary below to make sure that you are up to date on everything. If you have not turned in your hotel money and permission slip, please do so this week.

Have a wonderful rest of your weekend!
