Trojan Band Update

The game is still in the HS stadium Thursday. However, it will begin early. 

4:00- walk to and setup at HS

4:30 – play the game

5:30 – eat pizza

6pm – pickup at the HS 

Students will not have time to go home and change, or go to other clubs. They should come right to the band room and we will walk over. Parent committee meet at the HS at 4pm or as soon as you can get there.

The order is being placed today. Please do not turn in any more orders. I will release the delivery date as soon as it is provided to me. 

District Honor Band Permission and Form Due Tuesday. 

$5 DHB fee and form is due tomorrow, Tuesday, Sep 20th. If you would like your child to be a part of this elite group of kids that gets to represent our school at the audition please get your form turned in. 

Wednesday Help Session 

I will be doing another help session from 3:30-4:30 for anyone looking to get guidance on the DHB audition materials. 

Thursday Trojan Band 

The Trojan Band will be playing a game at 5:30pm in Grisham stadium on Thursday. The same schedule will apply as last week. 

  • 4:45 pm. drop at HS band room
  • 5:00 pm. warmup
  • 5:30 pm. Play at the game
  • 6:30ish. Eat pizza
  • 7:00ish. Pickup at the HS band room.

Concerts and Rehearsal Updates

Hello All,

We have finally received our Fall dates confirmed at the Mabry Arts Center.  Please mark these dates on your calendar or sync to the google calendar on our website by clicking the “Calendar” tab at the top.

After school rehearsals for our Fall Concert

Tuesday, October 25th – 7th grade band after school rehearsal 3:30 – 4:30

Thursday, October 27th – 8th grade band after school rehearsal 3:30 – 4:30

Fall Concert,  November 3rd – 7:00 pm – 8:00 pm

 

After school rehearsals for our Winter Concert

Tuesday, November 29th – 7th grade band after school rehearsal 3:30 – 4:30

Thursday, December 1st – 8th grade band after school rehearsal 3:30 – 4:30

Winter Concert,  December 6th  – 7:00 pm – 8:00 pm

This year only the bands from CJHS will perform on our concerts, this should make for better seating and parking in the parking lots.  We expect everyone will be able to come, sit in a seat, and enjoy the entire performance from both 7th and 8th grade bands.

Power School Check

Hello All,

All of my grades are now current in the grade book.  The current final grade consists of three assignments:

Participation:  100 points (any points lost here were from not being prepared, or being a distraction in class.)

Paperwork:  50 points (this is the behavior contract that went with the handbook, you can print it again from the “Forms” section on this website if you did not turn it in)

Fall Chair Test:  100 points (this was a comprehensive test on a minimum of 2 scales played correctly, a prepared solo, and a sightreading line.  This test can be made up before or after any class, any day.)

Please remember that my class is a performance based class that requires several hours of practice at home each week.  If your child has a lower grade you may want to talk with them about their practice plan at home, and how they can prepare to make up their grade and prepare for future tests.  Please see my previous post about private lessons as well for extra help.

Parent Volunteer Opportunity

I was contacted by our parent liaison from the HS band to see if any of my awesome 8th grade band parents would like to get involved with our marching contest “Legacy of Champions”.  This band contest is one of our biggest fundraisers and it would be awesome to get you all involved.  Here is all the info:

There are many jobs and shifts still available from logistics, equip hauler, concessions, admin, volunteer coordinating, gate attendants, sales, parking, and many more!!!  For those that choose to work the whole day you will be recognized as a “Rockstar Volunteer” and receive a t-shirt, dinner, and be recognized at a Carrollton football game.

Now that we are done with our first round of chair tests, and our DHB materials have been passed out, I thought it might be good to let you know about some private lesson opportunities to help improve chair position or prepare for the DHB audition in December.  Here is our list of instructors for this year.

Please email them directly and setup a time to meet at the CJHS band room.  For most 7th and 8th graders a 30 min lesson once a week will make a huge difference in their playing and confidence and will also help them get prepared for their DHB audition in December.  Lessons from our college students will cost no more than $15 half an hour.

I hope you consider signing up for a weekly lesson here at the band room.

This Week in Band

Hello All,

Last week was awesome, the parent committee that helped out for the Trojan Band game was superb, and the kids had a great time.  Bravo to all who were involved !!!

We have a few things happening this week in band class that are important, here are a few friendly reminders:

Wednesday:  DHB Help Session

District Honor Band Help Session from 3:30 – 4:30.  We will be helping all students who are signed up get on a plan to get them prepared for their audition in December.  Please plan on coming Wednesday, or make sure to communicate with me about your plan for preparation.  I will be posting a list of lesson instructors today after this post.  It is highly recommended that you take a private lesson.

Thursday:  Cookie Dough Turn-In Day

Please make sure your order form are filled out completely including all “total” boxes.  If you sold 10 or more be sure to write “Free Box” on the form and pick your flavor.  Please put all money into an envelope and staple it to your order form.  Only those that paid should be written on the order form.   Students should bring their orders directly to the band room at 7:45AM, not waiting until their band class.

District Honor Band Information

It is around this time every year that we begin talking about District Honor Band and All-State Honor Band auditions and I wanted to get you the information about it because I believe we have tons of talented kids who should be participating this year.

Each school in Georgia is zoned to a district, ours is in district seven.  Each district is given audition materials to distribute to our students and an audition is held, two large bands are picked from the highest scoring students at the auction to make up the district honor band event which is held during the second semester.  We will work on audition materials in class and it is my hope that your child will audition for the DHB. District Honor Band participation and All-State Band Participation is looked at very highly by colleges and employers because of the extra time and the personal responsibility it takes to successfully audition and make one of these prestigious bands.

Students wishing to audition for the District Honor Band must pay a fee of $5 to participate.  This is recommended for 7th graders or first time auditionees.

Students wishing to participate on a higher level can pay an additional $20 ($25 total) in order to be considered for the All-State audition, if their District audition score is high enough.  This is recommended for 8th grade students who either auditioned or made the District Band last year.

Timeline and Calendar:

September 20th – All forms and Fee’s are due. $5 for DHB or $25 for DHB and All-State Fees.

Sep 14th –  After School Help Session, 3:30 – 4:30pm at the CJHS Band Room

Sep 21st – After School Help Session, 3:30 – 4:30pm at the CJHS Band Room

Oct 5th  – After School Help Session, 3:30 – 4:30pm at the CJHS Band Room

Oct 19th  – After School Help Session, 3:30 – 4:30pm at the CJHS Band Room

Nov 2nd – After School Help Session, 3:30 – 4:30pm at the CJHS Band Room

Nov 16th  – After School Help Session, 3:30 – 4:30pm at the CJHS Band Room

 

December 3rd – District Honor Band Auditions.  We will be taking a bus up to the audition and having dinner afterwards together as a group.  (More info TBA)

Final updates

Trojan Band will meet tomorrow at 5pm on the dot to warm up. To be early is to be on time, please arrive a little before 5 to the HS band room. Any students staying after school will walk over to the HS at 4:30. 

Shirts will be in tomorrow morning, hats will not be finished in time for this game. Your child is allowed to wear a hat that they like and sunglasses. Also please make sure they drink water to prepare for being outdoors tomorrow afternoon. Sunscreen is also important. 

Pickup will be at 7pm at the HS band room.

Friendly Reminders

8th grade chair testing

Starts today in class for all 8th grade students. Please come prepared. 

Trojan Band

We had an awesome rehearsal yesterday. The kids are ready for Thursday’s game. I will pass out shirts and hat as soon as they are delivered. I will need all parent committee members who checked Trojan band committee Thursday at 5pm. I will let you know where the game will be as soon as our administrators let me know. 

District Honor Band Help Session

This help session is today from 3:30-4:30 for those students who signed up. If you cannot make it to today’s session we will have more. Refer to your packet and sign up sheet for details. More packets can be obtained in the band room. I will also post the info today.
