Celebrating Last Night, Yet Looking Ahead

Good afternoon,

Last night was absolutely incredible! Thank you so much to all that attended, all who helped out and to the students for putting on an incredible performance. Both groups did exceptionally well and played with passion and focus. It was also an honor to recognize those who serve this country or who have in the past. Thank you very much for your service to this great country.

Please keep in mind two important details for our concerts.

  1. I ask that students appear on time and stay for the duration of the concert. In their uniform, performing at a high level, and being a respectful audience member when the other band is on stage. Some band directors require a sign-in and sign-out sheet for their concerts that count towards their grade for the night. I do not want to push towards that at all, but I do want to emphasize that showing up on time and  leaving at the appropriate time is a must. I strive to keep the concerts as short as possible and I hope that last night demonstrated my intentions. We live in a busy world and committing any school night to an activity is a strain but hopefully you see that the few nights of the year for band are a good night spent out!
  2. The concerts are a grade. Students who work tirelessly each day in class deserve the chance to perform their pieces for a supportive audience. Please do your best to make sure that your student gets that wonderful moment with their classmates. I promise you that I work them HARD during the school day so I want them to show off for you. Nothing makes me happier than allowing them to set goals for themselves and then to see them reach those goals together, in front of a supportive audience.

We have some important dates coming up so I have listed them here below:

  • This upcoming Friday (10th) our 8th graders will perform during the school day at the Veterans Day Assembly. Students will report to school as normal and leave as normal. I will also feed them pizza for lunch. I will post timed details on Monday and ask for volunteers to help serve pizza at that time.
  • November 17th: 8th Grade Carowinds Deposit Due $50
  • November 28th: 7th Grade after school rehearsal for Christmas Concert (3:30-5) *Mandatory
  • November 30th: 8th Grade after school rehearsal for Christmas Concert (3:30-5) *Mandatory
  • December 2nd: District Honor Band Tryouts (Details to follow)
  • December 5th: CJHS Christmas Concert 7PM (6:30 Report Time)
  • December 15th: Carowinds payment due ($50).
  • February 10th: Symphonic Camp! Getting that approved right now and hoping to settle in on some details soon. It will be shorter than previous years and will include different activities that I think the students will enjoy. As soon as I know I will update our calendars and notify you. This event is for both 7th and 8th grades.

Sincerely,

Maria Menendez

Concert Tonight!

Concert: We have our first concert of the year this week! Today at 7 PM in the Mabry Arts Center will be a night full of wonderful music. Remember to have your students walk in wearing their band polo, black dress pants, black shoes and black socks, (black belt if possible.)

I ask that you take your students phone up before the concert begins. They will not need it while performing or while watching the other bands. The worst thing that can happen is an app or phone making a loud sound during our concert. These students have worked extremely hard and I do not want anything to take away from that.

Report time for students is 6:30!

Carowinds: Remember that the $50 deposit is due November 17th. That is for parents and chaperones! Please write all checks out to CJHS Band or use our Revtrak website.

I will need a volunteer that would be willing to collect Carowinds checks or cash at the concert and give receipts. You would do this before the concert started (6:30-7:00) and then between 7th and 8th grade. Please email me if you are interested in helping out.

District Honor Band: DHB students have their mock audition this Thursday (since kids are not in school on Friday). I will listen to these auditions and determine if the student is prepared enough to audition this year. I would never want a student to enter the audition feeling underprepared. That does not set them up for an audition that gives them a sense of pride and accomplishment, it does quite the opposite. Please ensure that you hear your student practicing each day this week at home in preparation for that mock audition. I am so proud of them for their work so far!

We have our weekly after school session for DHB kids or kids who need help on Wednesday until 4:45.

Have a great week!

A great week!

Good morning,

We had a blast last night at the Championship where our Trojans became champions! Congratulations to them and congratulations to our band students who cheered them on the whole season. Thank you to our parents who are flexible and creative (as pictured below). You all allow me to focus on the kids and ensuring that they lose their voices from screaming so hard and from playing so loud!

We had TWO rehearsals this week and had wonderful attendance from our students. Both groups sound very prepared for our concert next week and I cannot wait to play under the lights at the Mabry Art Center next Thursday, November 2nd, at 7PM. Remember that students are dressed in black dress pants, black dress shoes, black socks, and their band performance polo. I have extra polos for our new students and any student can turn theirs in for a larger size if I have their size available.

Carowinds: Remember that the $50 deposit is due November 17th. That is for parents and chaperones! Please write all checks out to CJHS Band or use our Revtrak website.

Today a trombone came in for one of our students who upgraded to a higher level instrument! His mother simply called Music & Arts and asked about the price difference between renting a trigger trombone. Remember that if you upgrade to a higher level instrument that they will apply whatever you have paid in rent on the first instrument (from 6th grade) to this upgraded instrument. So let’s say that you have paid $500 in rent in the instrument that was purchased on instrument night, when you upgrade to this new instrument they will apply that $500 to that instrument. That should make it so that you pay off this upgraded instrument faster and can possibly even purchase it. Please consider upgrading your child’s instrument as they progress so that they can play on higher quality instruments that produce a better sound, play more in tune, have additional keys to make playing easier, and allow for more fluidity in their playing. Check out the pictures below of Jeb Jackson unboxing his trigger trombone!

Have a wonderful weekend!
